Undertype steam engine - stock code 2872

A beautifully-made little undertype engine, something around 3/4 to 1 inch scale. Modelled on a typical nineteenth century factory undertype, the copper water tube boiler supplies steam to a single cylinder mounted beneath the smokebox saddle, the crankshaft is mounted in front of the throatplate. The whole thing is mounted on a substantial brass base, itself on a polished wooden base. The boiler is clad in blue steel all over. There is no burner but the model appears to have been spirit-fired in the past - the burner would stand beneath the firebox, the base is cut away for access. The engine turns over smoothly and appears to have had little use over the years.

There is a brass builder's plate "S G Friar 1944" on the smokebox saddle.
