Terms of business

We endeavour to conduct business in an open, straightforward way. We offer and hope to receive honesty and fairness in our business dealings and have yet to come across a dishonest model engineer (honestly!). To be specific, we offer the following terms:

Buying from Station Road Steam

  • Prices shown on the website are inclusive - for the UK and Europe new locomotives and parts are shown including VAT at the prevailing UK rate. For countries outside the EU, prices are shown in your local currency, excluding VAT. Second hand items do not have recoverable VAT - the price you see is the price you pay, wherever you're fortunate enough to live in the world.

  • All models are inspected thoroughly in the workshop, photographed and have a short report written on their condition. Every item listed on this site has notes and, usually, one or more photographs which you can see. The photographs are usually taken outside the workshop, in good natural light.

  • We describe all the stock as accurately and impartially as possible, "warts and all" if necessary. You are welcome to inspect anything in the workshop, please call to arrange a visit first - the workshop is open Monday to Thursday 9am-5pm, Friday 9am-3pm

  • Everything we sell is on 14 days approval. If it's not what you expected or thought had been described, we will take it back provided it is in substantially the same condition that it went out. We refund the price in full less shipping - no "ifs", no "buts", no quibbling!

  • We don't accept deposits to reserve items. If you want to come and see an engine, give us a call - we are usually more than happy to hold it for 7 days to give you a chance to make arrangements to visit.

  • We accept payments in UK£ sterling by bank transfer, debit card or cheque.

All credit card payments are handled by SagePay, one of the UK's largest and most respected payment processing providers. To learn more about SagePay, visit the SagePay website. Funds can also be wire-transferred direct to our bank, our account details are on your invoice. In general we don't accept credit cards for larger purchases - usually anything over £1000 - unless by prior arrangement, due to high commission charges.

We reserve the right to clear personal cheques before despatching goods. If at all possible, we prefer not to accept cash - it's a security risk for all concerned, takes forever to count and needs to be taken to the bank who then charge us an extortionate sum for the privilege of putting it into our account!

Please do not wire transfer funds without first receiving an invoice showing the exact amount to pay. We have had instances in the past of overpayment, underpayment and payment for engines that had been sold weeks before - it takes an inordinate amount of time to sort out!

  • Invoices, receipts and international shipping waybills

We issue a receipt for everything sold which includes description, stock number, price and shipping costs. We are required to keep copies here for the Inland Revenue and HM Customs & Excise, in addition goods sold overseas have additional copies printed for customs both here and in the destination country.

For all sorts of reasons (but mainly because it's illegal) we don't adjust receipts for £5000 locomotives to show "£50 - sold as spare parts", list traction engines as "garage equipment" or ten year old Myford lathes as "Antique workshop equipment - of no commercial value" (and yes, we've been asked for all of these over the years) - so please don't embarrass the office by asking!

  • Collection/delivery

We can deliver just about anything, anywhere, from a Stuart 10V to a 4 inch sale Showmans engine. If you require delivery, please ask for a quote. If you would prefer to collect, you are welcome to visit the workshop - we're open Monday to Thursday 9am-5pm, Friday 9am-3pm but do please make an appointment first.

If you intend to collect, goods will be stored for the first month free of charge, then for two more months charged at a rate of £20/pallet or part thereof. After three months, the item will be offered for sale on the website again. Sorry if this sounds a bit draconian, but we have regularly had engines left here for more than a year, which causes a real headache when we have to keep moving them about to get at other things.

Selling to Station Road Steam

  • If we are interested in something you have for sale, we will make every effort to give you an estimate of its value by telephone or email. This is entirely without obligation to you. The more information you can provide, the more accurate a price we can give - a photograph is very useful.

  • We pay in full on collection, however please note that we buy on 7 days approval. If, after inspection in our works, we decide for any reason not to proceed with purchase, we will give notice within that time and undertake to arrange for return of the item at our expense in return for a full refund of the price paid.
