Biggest of the Stuart single cylinder steam engines, the 5a is 2 1/4 bore x 2
inch stroke, massively built and provided with generous bearing surfaces for
continuous operation. The engine has a balanced crank and this, combined with
the short stroke and stiff trunk guide allow for prolonged high speed running.
Stuart rated the engine at 5/8 bhp on 60 psi pressure.
This engine has been well-built with drain cocks and a mechnical lubricator.
It runs very nicely.
The 5a has found many uses over the years, from running workshop generating
sets to powering small full-size steam boats.
