This is a part-built locomotive to the Don Young design for Hunslet's "Quarry" class of engine, many examples of which have survived into preservation after a working life in the Welsh slate quarries. In 5 inch gauge it produces a good-sized, powerful engine working out at nearly 2 inch scale - all the parts are easy to handle with no fiddly "watch-making" required.
Work completed includes:
Frames with stretchers and buffer beams
Hornblock, hornstays and axleboxes all fitted
Wheels, axles and flycranks (fitted and quartered)
Valve eccentric straps and sheaves
Pump eccentric strap and sheave
Unmachined castings included:
Valve chests and covers (gun metal)
Cylinder covers (GM)
Smokebox door and ring (GM)
Petticoat pipe (GM)
Chimney base and cap (cast iron)
Fittings:
Injector
Pair of water gauges with blowdown valve and glass
Oil pump ratchet wheel, pawl and spring set
Water pump
Included is a professionally-built silver-soldered copper boiler, tested to 200psi for 100 psi working. The workmanship on the chassis so far is good. The remainder of the castings for this engine are still available from Reeves
I have included a picture of one of the survivors, "Cloister" to give an idea of the size and shape of this attractive engine.
