Part-built 4 inch scale Foster traction engine - stock code 7305

A part-built 4 inch scale Foster agricultural engine to the popular Live Steam Models design - we've had lots of these in over the years, their popularity is well-deserved, it's a well-proportioned, powerful engine. There are lots of pictures of finished engines in the archive, this one gives you an idea of what they turn out like.

Work to date is to a good standard and comprises

  • commercially built boiler supplied by Live Steam Models and complete with their paperwork detailing initial hydraulic test, complete with smokebox

  • set of commercially machined gears, including differential

  • machined crankshaft

  • machined flywheel

  • machined cylinder assembly complete with front & rear covers, piston, rod, crosshead and trunk guide

  • rolled and welded wheel rims, complete with T-rings

  • hornplates, complete with dummy rivets and main bearing housings with bronzes fitted

  • set of front and rear spokes

  • machined rear hubs and cover plates

  • formed tender sides, bottom and spud pan

  • machined front axle

  • large quantity of unmachined castings to complete (including three cast iron eccentric straps not shown in the pictures below)

  • drawings

Lots of hours in the workshop before you're ready to put a fire in the engine, but not a great deal extra to spend. As far as we can see there are castings to complete, much of the heavy and/or big work - crankshaft, cylinders, gears, flywheel, winch drum - is all done.
