Maxwell Hemmens enjoyed a reputation for excellent engineering throughout the 1980s and 90s. Started by John Hemmens in the 1970s, the company grew to employ thirty staff in its heyday, producing a range of high quality models of locomotives, traction engines and stationary engines, many of which have featured in these pages over the years.
In retirement John Hemmens went back to working single-handed from a shed in his garden - he visited our works on several occasions over the years, always a useful source of advice and information about the designs he'd created.
The engine runs in both directions on compressed air.
