One of the finest models of a diesel I've seen in any scale, a 7 1/4 inch gauge Class 08 shunter, scratchbuilt in steel throughout, including all bodywork. Detail is exceptional, with immaculately louvred panels, moveable windscreen wipers and working ventilator slats at the front, with all access hatches neatly hinged with locking catches - enough to gain the builder a Silver Medal at Harrogate Show.

Internally the drive train comprises an electric start, single cylinder four stroke engine coupled to the ubiquitous Eaton hydrostatic transmission, giving continously variable forward and reverse speeds. Unlike many builders using this unit, our man fitted a remote control from the transmission dump valve to the cab so that the engine can be pushed around dead engine. It starts readily, idles quietly and drives well.

Paintwork is on the whole very good, there are a couple of small patches that have been retouched.

If I thought I could get this one past Mrs P, I'd be happy to park it in our hall - I think it's lovely.
