5 inch gauge LMS Black 5 No.45156 "Ayrshire Yeomanry" - stock code 13222

We sold this one back in 2012, it's recently come back to us in much the same condition, running as well as ever. The workshop notes made after servicing and testing recently remark "a very nicely put together engine" - much the same as we thought 14 years ago!

Words below are from the last time it was here, photographs opposite and video were taken in recent days. The previous owner had removed the brake rigging to make dropping the grate easier - the parts are included.

A well-built Black 5 that came in recently, part of a collection of good engines that included the excellent 3 ½ inch gauge Stanier Mogul and unpainted “Tich” we sold recently (there’s also a 5 inch gauge rebuilt Scot and 3 ½ inch gauge Britannia awaiting testing in the workshop come from the same place).

Built to the well-regarded Don Young design, with superheated silver-soldered copper boiler, working pressure 90 psi, feed by twin injectors with hand pump in the tender. Piston valves actuated by Walschaert’s gear with screw reverser in cab. Mechanical lubricator.

There is a regulator extension handle, allowing the engine to be driven comfortably from a driving truck behind the tender.

Steve had this one out at his club a couple of weekends ago, he reports it goes well.

One of the few Black 5s that carried a name, No.45156 was scrapped in 1968.
