5 inch gauge BR Standard Class 2 - stock code 2884

Elderly example of Don Young's fine Class 2 Mogul design.

Silver soldered superheated copper boiler, feed by twin injectors with auxiliary hand pump in tender. Gunmetal piston valve cylinders, Waschaert's valve gear with screw reverser in cab. Twin mechanical lubricators mounted on running boards.

Pictures were taken down the club yesterday when I steamed it along with the Maid of Kent which has just come in. Jobs which need doing include, but are almost certainly not limited to, reverser handle shaft cracked, injectors don't even start to think about picking up, handpump feed side valve sticking, regulator linkage loose. It's pretty grubby throughout, the paintwork is well worn and the motionwork has seem plenty of work. On the plus side the blower works ok and the safety valves operate in the approved manner, which is about as much testing as I managed. You may have already guessed, but after an hour fiddling with this one in the failing light and persistent rain, thoughts of a hot shower and a mug of tea overcame my desire to play with it any more.

I've had one of these before, pictures in the archive. They go well, making steam in the usual way of Don Young designs, the modest-sized wheels giving them a decent load-hauling capacity.
