4 inch scale part-built Burrell traction engine - stock code 10048

A well-advanced 4 inch scale Burrell, the work of a professional engineer with many large-scale steam models to his credit, including a 7 1/4 inch gauge "Romulus", "Hercules" and "Thomas II".

Having recently turned 80, whilst still working daily in his large, comprehensively equipped workshop on a variety of projects he's decided time has come to move on a couple of the larger engines.

The Burrell has been built to a good standard, work to date comprises:

  • Steel boiler with expanded copper tubes, the plates and tubes were prepared by the builder before being professionally assembled
  • Machined cylinder block
  • Wheels complete with rubber tyres
  • Tender complete with fairleads and water lifter hose brackets
  • Commercially machined gears, including differential
  • Crankshaft with flywheel, main bearings and connecting rod
  • Majority of valve gear machined and fitted, including eccentric sheaves, straps, rods and expansion link
  • Steering gear

There is a quantity of unmachined gunmetal castings including safety valves, clacks and water pump.

Other than boiler fittings - pressure and water gauges, injector and steam valves - there is not much else to be bought, the engine could be completed for the cost of some stock material, steel sheet and time in the workshop.
