4 1/2 inch scale Burrell - stock code 4034

A 4 ½ inch scale Burrell to the Plastow design, probably the most popular in this scale combining an elegantly proportioned engine with good performance on the rally field.

This engine was professionally-built some years ago by a company who used it as a project to keep their workshop busy in quiet times. When completed it appears to have been steamed only to test it, the grate remains in as-new condition, the motionwork and tyres show little sign at having run at all. It was subsequently sold to a local gentleman who steamed it once.

Welded steel boiler with welded steel tubes, fusible plug, working pressure 100psi. Twin Ramsbottom safety valves, feed by injector and mechanical pump. Full-sized steam valves are fitted – much like we use on "Stafford" - which are comfortable to use and reliable in operation.

Cast iron cylinder with slide valve actuated by Stephenson's gear, pole reverser on footplate. Mechanical lubricator, governor and whistle mounted on block.

Two road speeds with differential, winch behind nearside rear wheel, rubber tyres fitted on steel bands over strakes.

The engine was tested last month by our inspector which included an initial twice working pressure hydraulic test. The engine runs well and spent much of the afternoon ticking over in our yard.
