3 1/2 inch gauge Conway "Clwyd" 0-4-0ST - stock code 12609

A 3 1/2 inch narrow gauge 0-4-0ST to Martin Evans' Hunslet-inspired "Conway" design. As usual with narrow gauge prototypes you get a big model for the gauge - it comes out at 42 inches long with tender, weighing in at just over a hundredweight.

An older engine, well made in the first place although now requiring work including:

  • Replacement of worn small end bushes
  • Replacement of missing slide bar screw
  • Repair to leaking bottom water gauge bush
  • Repair to leak on firehole door ring

On hydraulic test there was a leak from the firehole door ring - it takes up under steam but will require attention - and bottom gauge bush. There was some verdigris on the front tubeplate indicating a possible leak in the past, however it was dry on test.

In steam the engine ran nicely with square, well-defined exhaust beats. The double acting hand pump is very effective, the axle pump and injector both work, although the latter picking up wet.

Paintwork is in poor condition - whilst stripped for repair we'd take the opportunity to repaint the engine.
