I remember being taken to see the engine in Canterbury by my father nearly fifty years ago. It had been presented to the city by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway in 1906, having been acquired by them in 1840 on taking over the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway. Amazingly, back in the seventies it was displayed outside, protected only by a simple iron fence and exposed to the elements!
In 1977 it was cosmetically restored, these days housed indoors at the Whitstable Museum.
The model has had a hydraulic test - the boiler is sound and warrantied as such, it's a beautifully made thing. The engine will need a new dome gasket and attention to a leaking regulator if intended for regular use - the chassis runs well on air.
