We've had this one in before - pictures below were taken yesterday, words are from 2011.

A BR Standard Class 4 to LBSC's "75000" design. LBSC maintained a correspondence with Robert Riddles, designer of the prototype, which led to him producing 3 1/2 inch designs for both this and "Britannia", somewhat of a coup at the time, as he was able to provide "Model Engineer" with a construction series for "Britannia" the month the prototype first rolled out of the works. 75000 was serialised in "English Mechanics" during the time of his big fall-out with "Model Engineer" - whether it was due to the smaller circulation of that magazine, or other designs firing people's imagination, there have been relatively few of these built over the years; this is the first one we've had in.

Not sure whether this one is a new, or simply re-boilered, engine - either way, the firebox has never seen a fire to date. Although not built to any kind of exhibition finish and with a paint job that is long on gloss and short on masking tape, it surprised Steve and I when he ran it on air in the workshop - it goes very well, a free-running chassis with good solid exhausts. The silver soldered copper boiler is by John Ellis, quality as is you would expect from a man who's made not far short of a thousand boilers over the years. Working pressure 80psi, three element flue-tube superheaters, feed by axle pump and injector with a hand pump in the tender. Gunmetal cylinders, piston valves actuated by Walschaert's gear with screw reverser in cab, mechanical lubricator. Most of the cab fittings have been liberally covered with overspray, it's the first engine we've had in with a gauge glass in grey primer...

It will need some fettling before use, certainly the cab fittings could use dismantling, cleaning and putting back together again. There will undoubtedly be a variety of "new engine" tweaks required - glands packing, pipework leaks fixing, all the usual stuff - but there is potential in this to make a good looking engine.
