Built by a professional engineer to a high standard, fit and finish of machined parts is good; the backhead is neatly laid out, platework is crisply executed. Paintwork is in good condition, although we'd be tempted to repaint into lined gloss black, similar to another Class 2 we bought from its builder back in 2014.
It's recently arrived back in much the same condition as the last time we had it. In steam earlier in the week, it still "runs superbly in both directions and makes steam well", according to the workshop notes.
Both injectors are reliable and effective, there is an auxiliary hand pump as backup. Safety valves open and don't accumulate, but require persuasion to close.
Fitted with steam brakes, the valve and cylinder require attention to address leaks (not to mention lack of any detectable retardation) when applied.
We gave the boiler a hydraulic test when it arrived so that we could steam it; there was no sign of leaks or distortion, however the all-welded boiler had no paperwork when it first arrived with us in 2016. At the very least it will require lifting from the frames and cladding stripping off for a thorough examination and test.
Complete with a purpose-built transport cradle.
