Broken safety valve

The safety valves from the 12 1/4 inch gauge Pacific "T.J.Thurston". The one on the right in the first picture cracked when the engine was in light steam and fractured completely when an attempt was made to remove it later. The valves are original and date from 1949 - the body of the other valve shows no signs of cracking.

Picture on the right shows the new bodies in bronze, made near identical to the originals although with thicker walls in the centre, waisted section.

Moral is: inspect your safety valves (indeed all boiler fittings) regularly and don't put a spanner on them when the engine is in steam.
